How To Select And Maintain A Replacement Razor Scooter Battery

You've reached the dreaded point where you pull the throttle on your Razor scooter and nothing happens. You have a couple choices. You could go buy another scooter, the newer model you've had your eye on for the past few months. Or, did you know you can actually buy a replacement battery for your current razor scooter? This is a great option if you don't have the funds for a whole new scooter, or just love the one you have currently.

As long as you take care of your battery and charge it appropriately, you should get the maximum life out of it. But when it comes time to shop for a new one, there are several websites out there that can help you choose the one for you. You see, Razor has begun producing a variety of not only electric scooters, but other battery-powered products as well. Looking at a picture of the battery you are considering generally isn't enough. Since there are so many options, you'll want to understand the specs of your particular scooter and battery, making sure you select the right connectors, voltage, amperes, and size. Many websites offer item indexes to help you select the appropriate Razor scooter battery for your model. And when you receive the battery, keep in mind there probably is not a neighborhood scooter mechanic; you will be installing and connecting the new battery yourself.

Charging the battery properly is a separate issue. If you have purchased a brand new battery and are still having issues, understand proper charging procedure. Your charger should tell you if your battery is charging via a light on the charger. Plug the charger into the wall first, and then into the battery. You can also inadvertently limit your batteries capabilities by not providing enough of an initial charge. When you first take your battery out of the box, be sure to read the directions and charge the full duration (sometimes as much as 12 hours) before operating the scooter. If this initial charge isn't done properly, it can damage the battery life.

Another factor to consider when purchasing a new Razor scooter battery is whether to go OEM ("Original Equipment Manufacturer") or third party. Keep in mind you may be able to save a few bucks by buying a "generic" battery, but many of these batteries also claim to have equal or better specs as the originals. Make sure you do your research, and pick up a battery that has a warranty just to be safe. It's easy to find batteries with at least a 1-year warranty.

Above all else, enjoy your ride and be safe!
